OGBE SECONDARY SCHOOL AND IDIA COLLEGE CROWNED CHAMPIONS AS EDO GOVERNOR'S CUP 2025 CONCLUDES IN GRAND STYLE
It was a festival of football, unity, and youthful excellence on Tuesday, May 27th, 2025, as the curtain fell on the much-celebrated Edo Governor’s Cup 2025. The finals, held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, drew a capacity crowd of students, teachers, sports lovers, and top government officials, all gathered to witness the climax of a tournament that had, over several weeks, captivated the entire state.
In the highly anticipated male category final, Ogbe Secondary School proved their mettle and dominance with a resounding 3-0 victory over St. Peter’s Grammar School, Agenebode. Right from the kickoff, the boys from Ogbe set the tone, displaying flair, discipline, and tactical superiority.
The first goal came courtesy of Osifo Believe, whose clinical finish sent the Ogbe fans into wild celebrations. The team doubled their advantage through Idor Samuel, whose audacious strike from outside the box left the St. Peter's goalkeeper rooted to the spot. The match was sealed when Izregba Ogijo finished off a sweeping counter-attack, confirming Ogbe’s status as champions of the Edo Governor’s Cup 2025.
The victory was met with jubilant scenes, with the Ogbe team lifting the coveted trophy high to the admiration of their supporters, and singing school anthems in celebration.
Earlier in the day, the female final was equally thrilling as Idia College outclassed St. Angela Grammar School with a 2-0 victory to claim the female title. The encounter was a showcase of talent, resilience, and teamwork.
Umoru Fatima opened the scoring for Idia College with a composed finish, sending waves of excitement across the stadium. Not to be outdone, Enoduwenben Favour added a second with a well-taken goal in the second half, ensuring Idia College etched their name in history as champions of the 2025 edition.
Their triumph was greeted with chants, cheers, and heartfelt celebrations from their supporters and well-wishers.
In a remarkable gesture of appreciation and encouragement, the Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebolo, presented both winning schools with brand new Toyota Hiace buses to aid their school transportation systems and further boost sports development.
The Governor, accompanied by his Deputy, Dennis Idahosa, the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Mr. Blessing Agbebaku, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, and the Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Amadin Enabulele, commended all the participating schools for their display of sportsmanship, discipline, and talent throughout the competition.
Senator Okpebolo reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to grassroots sports development, noting that the Governor’s Cup would continue to be a platform for discovering and nurturing young sporting talents in Edo State.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Schools Sports Foundation, Yomi Elijah , the organisers of the prestigious Governor’s Cup, extended heartfelt appreciation to all participating schools, coaches, and officials for their dedication and sportsmanship throughout the tournament.
Special recognition was given to the Edo State Government, the Edo State Sports Commission, the Ministry of Education, and the tournament’s major sponsor, Peculiar Ultimate Concerns, for their unwavering support in making the event a success.
