Team Bayelsa emerge champions of the 2022 Milo Basketball Championship
Team Bayelsa recorded a double at the 22nd edition of the Milo Secondary School Basketball Championship held at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Lagos.
Earlier in the day, St Jude’s Girls Secondary School Amarata, Bayelsa defeated Akpur Colleg, Benue 38-14 to win the girls final.
Most Valuable player of the final, Abigail Isaac scored a double double, 12 points and 10 rebounds with four steals and two asissts to go with it.
Angel Michael added 10 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals in 38 minutes.
St Jude’s Girls gave their opponent from Benue no chance leading from start to finish as they could only score four points in the first half (4-20).
Things got worse in the second half as the Bayelsa team left their opponent from Benue in a sorry state.
Following their win against Akpur College on Thursday, St Jude Girls Secondary School became seven-time champions of the Milo Secondary School Basketball Championship.
In the boys category, Bishop Dimieari Grammar School, Bayelsa beat Government Secondary School FCT, Abuja 36-33 to win the final.
Unlike the girls final, the boys final was evenly matched with seven lead changes in the game.
The Bayelsa team led by three in the first quarter 10-7 but could not hold on for too long as they trailed by two going to break (15-17).
With two minutes remaining, the two sides traded basket to bring the game to level 33-33. While the Abuja team missed a lay up in the last 30 seconds of the game, Team Bayelsa made a team rebound and the most valuable player, Okini Valour Ewomazino scored a buzzer beating shot as Bishop Dimieari won their first Milo Basketball Championship.
Ewomazino scored 12 points, four rebounds and two blocks while Daniel Desire added 14 points in the game.
Team Bayelsa head coach Tony Nelson was excited to win the boys and girls category.
“I feel so excited for the girls winning it for the seventh time and especially the boys winning for the first time. People have been asking me I win with the girls all the time what about the boys but they have finally done it. The whole Bayelsa were all saying the boys must win I am so happy they made it happen.”
