Edo Governor’s Cup: Gov. Okpebolo, Other Top Dignitaries to Attend as St Peter’s, Ogbe, Idia, St Angela Set Up Finals Showdown
The air in Edo State is thick with excitement as the curtain prepares to fall on the highly anticipated Edo State Governor’s Cup 2025, with four outstanding schools earning their rightful places in the male and female finals. The annual football showpiece, known for unearthing some of the state’s brightest young talents, will climax in grand style on Tuesday, May 27th, Children’s Day, at the historic Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.
From the opening whistle to the semi-final clashes, this year’s Governor’s Cup has lived up to its billing, a vibrant celebration of skill, passion, and youthful ambition. Organized by the School Sports Foundation and powered by Peculiar Ultimate Concerns Ltd, the competition has drawn participation from schools across the state, providing a platform for budding footballers to showcase their talents and represent their communities with pride.
In the female category, football powerhouse Idia College delivered a masterclass in dominance, overwhelming Umagbae Grammar School with an emphatic 6-0 victory. Their seamless teamwork, clinical finishing, and tactical discipline left spectators in awe and firmly established them as favourites for the title.
In the second semi-final, St Angela Grammar School, Auchi displayed similar determination, outgunning Eguare Senior Secondary School, Ekpoma in a pulsating contest that ended 5-2. The match was a thrilling showcase of attacking football, with both teams trading goals in the early stages before St Angela’s superior firepower saw them pull clear in the final quarter.
The male category served up its own share of drama and nerve-wracking moments. St Peter's Grammar School, Agenebode, in a tense encounter against Agba Senior Secondary School, Uromi, battled to a goalless draw in regulation time before holding their nerve in a dramatic penalty shootout, triumphing 3-2 to book their place in the final.
Joining them is Ogbe Secondary School, who edged past a spirited St David's Mixed Model School, Evboneka in a closely fought contest that ended 2-1. The match was a testament to the grit and determination of both sides, with Ogbe holding on to secure a memorable win.

The grand finale promises to be a spectacle of youthful energy, tactical battles, and community pride.

The Governor’s Cup 2025 final will be a special highlight of Edo State’s Children’s Day celebrations. Expected to grace the event are Governor Godwin Okpebolo, the Director-General of the Edo State Sports Commission Amadin Desmond Enabulele,, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Emmanuel Paddy Iyamu,
top executives of Peculiar Ultimate Concerns Ltd, and an array of dignitaries from the education, sports, and private sectors.
